twitter questionsMichael Herndon 2012-08-20, 14:17
I went to update the twitter feed and saw these questions in case
anyone wants to answer these: @Nick_Craver @LuceneDotNet - is anyone already working on a NIOFSDirectory port? Unless I misunderstand, it would be a huge boost to our SSD environment' @intelligibabble would love it if some #lucene or @LuceneDotNet gurus took a look at my SO question stackoverflow.com/questions/1135… http://stackoverflow.com/questions/11354455/using-lucene-net-thread-safe-from-asp-net-web-application

Re: twitter questionsNicholas Paldino [.NET/C#... 2012-08-20, 14:24
You probably want to address it for Nick Craver, he's a developer for Stack Exchange and they'd use it on the site to improve performance (I'm a diamond mod on Stack Overflow).
They could probably be convinced to do another blog post indicating "search x% less sucky" because of the perf boost (they title their search blog posts like that). Regardless it would be good exposure for the project. - Nick On Aug 20, 2012, at 10:18 AM, "Michael Herndon" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > I went to update the twitter feed and saw these questions in case > anyone wants to answer these: > > @Nick_Craver > @LuceneDotNet - is anyone already working on a NIOFSDirectory port? > Unless I misunderstand, it would be a huge boost to our SSD > environment' > > @intelligibabble > would love it if some #lucene or @LuceneDotNet gurus took a look at my > SO question stackoverflow.com/questions/1135… > http://stackoverflow.com/questions/11354455/using-lucene-net-thread-safe-from-asp-net-web-application >

I've also found the question on SO, I'll give it a shot later today.

I'm terrible with social media- is there any way to have tweets directed at @LuceneDotNet sent to one of our mailing lists? Or should I just get on top of monitoring it more often?

Get MetroTwit or TwitDeck and create your own Twitter account while at it :)

Re: twitter questionsWyatt Barnett 2012-08-20, 15:03
Without getting all social media saavy like Itamar here you can
automate that pretty easily. I've got no idea what email account is backing the @LuceneDotNet, but you can setup twitter to automatically email you when you are mentioned (ie -- someone puts @LuceneDotNet in a tweet); should be pretty trivial to setup a mail forwarding rule that forwards these to the list. Slightly fancier would be to use twitter's search API to search for tweets mentioning @LuceneDotNet which could be grabbed, formatted and mailed to the list. Downside is that, once we get some decent twitter traffic going we'll get bad signal to noise ratios. Hard to identify questions versus "hey @LuceneDotNet look what I did". Re: twitter questionsNicholas Paldino [.NET/C#... 2012-08-20, 15:03
Twitter doesn't support RSS feeds of tweets anymore.
However, you can use the API to poll (or get tweets streamed to you) and then do whatever you want to them. However, I think that given the nature of twitter, you should consider whether or not the tweets are forwarded to the developer account. It might be easier to have someone (or a few) just monitor the account regularly. - Nick On Aug 20, 2012, at 10:53 AM, "Prescott Nasser" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > I'm terrible with social media- is there any way to have tweets directed at @LuceneDotNet sent to one of our mailing lists? Prescott, you already handle enough of the load as it is. I've dropped
the ball on social media thing, I'll make sure things get posted on the list from here on out. If we send notifications to the mailing list, my guess is that it would be security issue with password reset notifications and such, so we don't want to go that route. You can get RSS feeds if that would help folks. It isn't linked into
the profile page but rather now considered part of the API output. Ie, you want mentions of @LuceneDotNet in an atom format? Sure, go hit http://search.twitter.com/search.atom?q=@LuceneDotNet On Mon, Aug 20, 2012 at 11:04 AM, Michael Herndon <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > Prescott, you already handle enough of the load as it is. @wyatt,
Part of the problem was that notifications were just set to "by people I follow" vs "by anyone" so that is now fixed. In regards to the NIOFSDirectory, we have no plans on supporting it
for several reasons, the largest being that NIO (meaning New I/O) is a java only API. I guess it would be good to briefly discuss what NIO is in Java (anyone feel free to correct me when I inevitably get some of the details wrong :) The main features that NIO introduced were: * Regex pattern matching for file contents (used with the new abstractions of memory mapping a file to a buffer) * Character set encoders/decoders * Improved file system support with locking and memory mapping * Async I/O (the biggest one, I think) Most of these abstractions don't exist in .NET, but that doesn't mean that comparable features don't either. :) On that end, since we're trying to use .NET constructs, I have personally been experimenting with I think would be an equivalent to the NIOFSDirectory in java, one that uses Async I/O (this seems to be the only thing that lucene uses from the NIO api). The first thing I was curious about was any speed increases using Async I/O for index writing (lucene does not do this), and I was a first surprised when I found that it was generally the same speed or a little slower. It was a learning experience because I discovered that asynchronous writes are not always run asynchronously in windows. I haven't had much time to experiment with the asynchronous reading, which is really the only different in NIOFS from a SimpleFSDirectory, but I'm hoping to get something similar to how the NIOFSDirectory is designed working in .NET. I have some other ideas related to memory mapped files, which we briefly prototyped but never added to core, but I think it would perform very well on SSD devices and so I'd like to revisit it. I guess the answer would be no we are not creating an NIOFSDirectory, but we are looking into an AsyncIODirectory. In theory, they should be pretty much the same, the real difference is the name. ;) Thanks, Christopher On Mon, Aug 20, 2012 at 8:27 AM, Prescott Nasser <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > @prescottnasser baby! I sent off the TL;DR portion of your answer with a permalink to the
actual response on the archive. Thanks Christopher.
